This course covers the fundamental building blocks of digital technology, from logic gates to programmable circuits, tailored for the applied-programme students.
- Number systems: binary, octal, and hexadecimal systems, conversions, encoding (BCD, Gray).
- Logic functions: Boolean algebra, logic gates, Karnaugh maps, function minimisation.
- Combinational circuits: encoders, decoders, multiplexers, adders, comparators.
- Sequential circuits: flip-flops (RS, JK, D, T), registers, counters, shift registers, state diagrams.
- Memory circuits: ROM, RAM, EEPROM, Flash.
- Programmable logic: PLA, PAL, GAL, CPLD, FPGA; introduction to hardware description languages (VHDL/Verilog).
- Hands-on work: implementation of digital circuits on breadboards and with programmable devices.
Objectives
To gain theoretical and practical knowledge for understanding and designing digital circuits.
After successful completion, students will be able to:
- describe and explain the operation of basic digital building blocks
- design simple combinational and sequential circuits
- implement a digital circuit on a breadboard
- use programmable logic devices to implement digital functions
- test circuit operation and troubleshoot faults
