Syllabus

This course covers the physical principles, construction, and applications of various sensor types.

  • Fundamentals: measurement chain, static and dynamic sensor characteristics, measurement uncertainty, calibration.
  • Temperature sensors: thermocouples, resistance temperature detectors (RTD), thermistors (NTC, PTC), infrared sensors.
  • Mechanical sensors: strain gauges (resistive, semiconductor), piezoelectric sensors, capacitive force and pressure sensors, MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes.
  • Optical sensors: photodiodes, phototransistors, optical encoders, optical fibres, LIDAR.
  • Magnetic sensors: Hall-effect sensors, magnetoresistive sensors (AMR, GMR), inductive sensors.
  • Chemical and biosensors: electrochemical sensors, gas sensors, enzymatic biosensors, pH electrodes.
  • Interface circuits: sensor amplifiers, Wheatstone bridge, temperature compensation, digitisation.

Objectives

To learn about the operation, characteristics, and applications of various sensor types and to acquire knowledge for integrating them into measurement systems.

After successful completion, students will be able to:

  • describe the physical operating principles of different sensor types
  • select an appropriate sensor for a given measurement task based on accuracy, range, and environmental requirements
  • design an interface circuit for a chosen sensor
  • evaluate the measurement uncertainty of a sensor system
  • calibrate a sensor and process the measured data
