UKC Ljubljana acquires state-of-the-art pulsed field ablation device
The University Medical Centre (UKC) Ljubljana has acquired the Affera system — a state-of-the-art device for pulsed field ablation (PFA) of cardiac arrhythmias. The device was purchased in cooperation with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana.
Pulsed field ablation is a novel technique that uses short, high-voltage electrical pulses to selectively ablate cardiac tissue responsible for arrhythmias. Unlike traditional thermal ablation methods, PFA exploits the principle of electroporation to achieve non-thermal, tissue-selective treatment, which reduces the risk of damage to surrounding structures.
The Laboratory of Biocybernetics has been involved in fundamental research on electroporation for decades, and the clinical adoption of PFA technology represents an important translation of this research into clinical practice.
