Syllabus

This course covers specialised electronic circuits and device architectures used in biomedical engineering.

  • Bioinstrumentation: measurement amplifiers (instrumentation, isolation), filters for biomedical signals, A/D and D/A conversion, sampling and quantisation.
  • Signal generators: electrical pulse generators for electrostimulation and electroporation, high-voltage power supplies, pulse shaping.
  • Electrostimulation: cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, neurostimulation, functional electrical stimulation (FES).
  • Electroporation: electronic requirements for electrochemotherapy, gene electrotransfer, and irreversible electroporation devices; monitoring systems.
  • Medical device safety: leakage current protection, galvanic isolation, biocompatibility of electrode materials.
  • Laboratory exercises: design and testing of electronic circuits for biomedical applications.

Objectives

To understand the design and operation of electronic circuits for biomedical applications and to gain practical experience in their development.

After successful completion, students will be able to:

  • design a measurement amplifier with an appropriate signal-to-noise ratio for a biomedical signal
  • design a pulse generator for electrostimulation or electroporation
  • explain the operation of cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, and neurostimulators
  • account for safety requirements in designing medical electronic devices
  • measure and evaluate the performance of designed circuits
