This course covers the design and implementation of measurements in medicine and biomedical engineering.
- Medical measurement systems: characteristics of biomedical signals, noise sources and interference, safety and accuracy requirements.
- Bioelectric signals: ECG, EEG, EMG — origin, acquisition, amplification, and filtering; electrodes and interfaces.
- Haemodynamic measurements: blood pressure measurement (invasive and non-invasive), blood flow, heart rate; pulse oximetry.
- Impedance measurements: bioimpedance analysis (BIA), impedance tomography, impedance plethysmography.
- Optical measurements: photoplethysmography, laser Doppler perfusion imaging, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).
- Imaging techniques: principles of CT, MRI, ultrasound, PET — physical basis, advantages, and limitations.
- Safety and standards: electrical safety of medical devices, IEC 60601 standards, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
Objectives
To learn about the measurement methods and systems used in medicine and to acquire knowledge for designing safe and reliable biomedical measurement devices.
After successful completion, students will be able to:
- describe the characteristics of biomedical signals and measurement systems
- select an appropriate measurement method for a given biomedical parameter
- design a measurement chain for acquiring bioelectric signals
- explain the operating principles of medical imaging techniques
- account for safety standard requirements when designing medical devices
