Prof. Miklavčič co-authors HRS/EHRA Scientific Statement on Pulsed Field Ablation

Prof. Damijan Miklavčič co-authored the 2026 HRS/EHRA Scientific Statement on Pulsed Field Ablation for Cardiac Arrhythmias, a joint document of the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) and the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA). The statement was presented at Heart Rhythm 2026 (April 23–26, McCormick Place, Chicago).

Pulsed field ablation (PFA) is a novel cardiac ablation technique based on electroporation — a key research area of our laboratory. Unlike traditional thermal approaches (radiofrequency or cryoablation), PFA uses high-voltage electrical pulses to selectively target cardiac tissue while minimising injury to surrounding structures. The scientific statement covers the biophysics of electroporation and waveform parameters, clinical applications including pulmonary vein isolation, procedural workflow, safety considerations, and identifies current knowledge gaps.

Prof. Miklavčič was interviewed about the statement by EP Lab Digest. The interview is available at: EP Lab Digest — Interview with Prof. Damijan Miklavčič.

The full scientific statement is published in Heart Rhythm (DOI: 10.1016/j.hrthm.2026.02.006).
