- Abstract
Electroporation is a rapidly growing field in medicine, applied in electrochemotherapy, gene electrotransfection, and irreversible electroporation, and over the past decade also in cardiac ablation for the treatment of arrhythmias. Despite the clinical success of these methods, the understanding of the mechanisms of cell death following electroporation remains fairly unknown. The aim of the proposed project is to investigate and understand the mechanisms of cell death in electroporation-based treatments. We will investigate whether the cellular response depends on the pulse type and how it changes with increasing distance from the electrodes within the ablation zone. Cell death will be analyzed at the level of gene expression, with particular attention devoted to changes in intracellular pH. The results will contribute to a better understanding and further improvement of electroporation-based therapies. - The phases of the project and their realization
The project consists of three work packages (WPs), WP1 dedicated to the study of signaling pathways of cell death after electroporation, WP2 to the study of changes in mitochondria and their involvement in cell death after electroporation, and WP3 to the dissemination and interpretation of the obtained data.
